Something significant is changing for businesses in Belize, and many business owners are not yet aware of it. The Government of Belize is introducing mandatory electronic invoicing for all GST-registered businesses. If your business generates BZD $75,000 or more per year, this change affects you directly. Here is what you need to know and what you need to do.
What Is GST and Does Your Business Need to Register?
GST stands for General Sales Tax. In Belize, any business that earns BZD $75,000 or more per year in taxable sales is required by law to register for GST with the Belize Tax Service Department. If your business has been operating for less than 12 months but is earning BZD $6,250 or more per month for four or more consecutive months, you must also register. Once registered, you must charge GST at 12.5% on most goods and services, file a GST return every month by the 15th of the following month, and keep proper records of every purchase and sale.
What Records Does the Government Require You to Keep?
The Belize Tax Service requires GST-registered businesses to maintain a Sales Ledger, a Purchase Ledger, and source documents for every transaction. Source documents include tax invoices for every purchase and tax receipts for every sale. These records must be available for audit by GST officers at any time. If your records are kept digitally, you are required to retain those electronic records as well as be able to produce accessible and readable copies when requested.
What Must a GST-Compliant Receipt Include?
Under the General Sales Tax Amendment Act 2024, every tax receipt issued in Belize must include your business name and TIN, the price of the goods or service excluding GST, the GST rate applied, the total GST amount charged, a unique serial number, and the date of the transaction. A receipt that is missing any of these details is not considered compliant. This applies whether the receipt is printed or digital.
Mandatory E-Invoicing Is Coming to Belize
In March 2026, Belize's Ministry of Finance announced plans to fully implement mandatory electronic invoicing for all GST-registered businesses as part of the 2026/2027 national budget. The legal foundation for this was already established by the GST Amendment Act 2024, which came into force January 1, 2025. The Belize Tax Service Department, with support from the Inter-American Development Bank, is managing this rollout. Technical specifications and phased timelines are expected to be published soon. For business owners, this means paper-based invoicing and handwritten receipts will not be acceptable going forward.
What Should Your Business Do Right Now?
The smartest thing you can do right now is move your invoicing and receipts to a digital system before the mandate forces you to. Businesses that are already operating digitally will have a much smoother transition than those scrambling to comply at the last minute. You need a system that generates numbered invoices, issues proper receipts, tracks your sales and purchases, and stores everything in a retrievable digital format.
How Wix Supports GST Compliance for Belizean Businesses
The Wix business dashboard includes invoicing, receipt generation, order management, and a complete transaction history — all stored digitally and retrievable at any time. Every invoice is automatically numbered and dated. You can configure your GST rate so it appears correctly on every document. Receipts are issued automatically when a customer pays. Sales records are stored in your dashboard and can be exported as needed for your monthly GST return.
You do not need a full public website to use these tools.
